Multiply
How to Multiply your Knowledge in less than five Minutes
Grammar is a fine thing. It helps us to multiply our language knowledge without much effort. With this app you have now mastered ~80 important irregular verbs of the German language. Obviously there are many more irregular verbs out there that I haven’t touched here. That’s due to the fact that it is simply not necessary to learn every individual form out there as you can easily create these with help of our 80 verbs here. There are two patterns that will help us save time. Please compare the following forms:
Infinitiv | Präteritum | Partizip II | English |
essen | aß | gegessen | to eat |
fressen | fraß | gefressen | to eat (for animals only) |
messen | maß | gemessen | to measure |
vergessen | vergaß | vergessen | to forget |
If it is not yet obvious to you, let me point out that grammar does not seem to care much about meaning but rather about form. Ever verb containing the word ‘essen’ changes the same way in the past tenses. That is also true for prefixed verbs. Take another look:
Infinitiv | Präteritum | Partizip II | English |
sehen | sah | gesehen | to see |
ansehen | sah an | angesehen | to watch |
absehen | sah ab | abgesehen | to foresee |
aussehen | sah aus | ausgesehen | to look (like) |
versehen | versah | versehen | to furnish |
You’ll get the idea. For the verb sehen alone I find plenty of variations (without translation as that doesn’t matter at this point):
- absehen
- ansehen
- aufsehen
- aussehen
- besehen
- durchsehen
- einsehen
- ersehen
- nachsehen
- übersehen
- umsehen
- versehen
- vorsehen
- vorhersehen
- zusehen
Unfortunately or rather luckily not every verb has so many variations. But it nicely illustrates my point. You might find a few core verbs missing that I didn’t integrate into the app because they are not needed in the beginner levels or because they simply slipped my attention. Feel free to make me aware of important verbs that you think are missing and we’ll see how we can integrate them into the next update.
